Route 7 Corridor Improvements in Fairfax County Celebrated Today

VIENNA – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) and Fairfax County today celebrated driver, bicycle and pedestrian improvements along seven miles of Route 7 (Leesburg Pike).

Construction began in 2019 on the Route 7 Corridor Improvements Project aimed at enhancing safety, reducing congestion and expanding mobility for all users as part of Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Plan.

The project widened Route 7 from four to six lanes between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. As a result, Route 7 is continuously at least six lanes from Leesburg to Tysons, a stretch totaling about 20 miles.

Six Lanes on Route 7 Open between Reston Avenue and the Dulles Toll Road

FAIRFAX – Drivers along nearly seven miles of Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) now have three travel lanes in each direction between Reston Avenue and the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Route 7 is now continuously at least six lanes for about 20 miles from Leesburg to Tysons.

The new eastbound and westbound lanes on about five miles of Route 7 between Riva Ridge Drive and Jarrett Valley Drive are open to traffic three months ahead of schedule as part of the Route 7 Corridor Improvements Project. The third eastbound and westbound lanes on nearly two miles of Route 7 between Reston Avenue and Riva Ridge Drive opened to traffic in 2022.

Three Lanes of Route 7 Eastbound Open in Reston

RESTON – Drivers along nearly two miles of eastbound Route 7 now have three travel lanes between Reston Avenue and Riva Ridge Drive, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The new eastbound lane opened today ahead of schedule as part of the Route 7 Corridor Improvements Project. The third westbound lane between Riva Ridge Drive and Reston Avenue is set to open the week of Oct. 10, also ahead of schedule.

Virtual Construction Update April 19 on Route 7 Corridor Improvements

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a virtual construction update Tuesday, April 19 on the improvements along about seven miles of Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. The project team will provide an overview on the project status and an update on the new Lewinsville Road intersection scheduled to open later this spring. The intersection will feature a displaced left-turn lane from eastbound Route 7 to Lewinsville Road.

New Turn Lane Opens at Baron Cameron Avenue in Reston

RESTON – A third left-turn lane from westbound Route 7 to Baron Cameron Avenue opened to traffic today, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The additional lane is expected to ease congestion through this heavily traveled intersection, as construction continues between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive for the Route 7 Corridor Improvements project. A Twitter video of traffic using the new turn lane can be viewed here.
